# Student hardware manufacturing specification handoff checklist

Blank editorial planning aid from nuspb.org, 17 October 2026.
Companion guide: https://nuspb.org/blog/manufacturing-specification-handoff-checklist/
No universal tolerances, process parameters, or vendor prices supplied. Leave unverified fields as TBD and resolve them with the workshop or maker before release.

## 1. Handoff package header

| Field | Entry |
|---|---|
| Project / assembly name | |
| Package release ID and date | |
| Build stage (campus workshop test / external prototype batch) | |
| Target assembly quantity | |
| Unit system and drawing projection standard | |
| Design specification reference (requirement IDs checked by this build) | |
| Package owner and contact | |
| Workshop or maker contact | |
| Release decision (Ready to release / Hold: see open blockers) | |

## 2. Part-by-part handoff manifest

Group parts into custom-fabricated components, special purchased parts, and stock fasteners (following Carnegie Mellon University 16-223 prototype BOM practice). Only custom-made parts require fabrication drawings (MIT D-Lab II Phase 3 Implementation).

| Part ID | Part name & role | Category (Custom / Purchased / Stock) | Qty / assembly | Material & finish | Process & where made | 3D CAD file & Rev | 2D drawing PDF & Rev | Inspection check & requirement ID | Open blocker / TBD & owner |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| | | | | | | | | | |
| | | | | | | | | | |
| | | | | | | | | | |
| | | | | | | | | | |

## 3. Order of production and quality checks

Record the sequence of fabrication and assembly, quality assurance conditions, and quality control checks (BBC Bitesize AQA manufacturing specification guidance).

| Step # | Operation or assembly stage | Part IDs involved | Workshop / equipment / safety note | Quality control (QC) check & measurement tool | Pass condition or TBD |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | | | | | |
| 2 | | | | | |
| 3 | | | | | |
| 4 | | | | | |

## 4. Pre-handoff consistency check (stop-release audit)

Answer every item before sending files to a technician or supplier:

- [ ] Every custom-fabricated part has a matching 3D CAD revision and 2D drawing revision in the manifest.
- [ ] Every 2D drawing states units, scale, material, finish, and datum-referenced dimensions without redundant chain dimensions that conflict under tolerance (MIT 2.007 drawing guidance).
- [ ] Standard off-the-shelf fasteners and purchased components list a vendor, part number, and quantity per assembly instead of unnecessary custom part drawings.
- [ ] Every part entry names a specific material and finish, or marks the cell `TBD` with an assigned owner and hold status.
- [ ] Annotated build photos, CAD views, and links to the underlying CAD files are attached so a collaborator can see how the parts assemble (Stanford Biodesign interim documentation guidance).
- [ ] Any unmeasured tolerance, unconfirmed stock size, or unverified shop capability is marked `TBD` for discussion with the maker rather than filled with a guessed number.

For educational and formative hardware prototyping only. This checklist does not establish regulatory compliance, safety certification, or mass-production readiness.
